What do you get when you mix an engagement party, medieval tournaments, and a surprise wedding? You get Ash and Craig’s absolutely unforgettable celebration! I had the honor of capturing this day, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride from start to finish.

Let’s set the scene: Ash and Craig invited their friends and family for what was supposed to be an engagement party, but little did anyone know, these two had a huge surprise up their sleeves. As the day unfolded, guests were treated to more than they bargained for — it turned into a full-on wedding, complete with a medieval-themed extravaganza that felt like stepping into a time machine. Seriously, I half expected to see knights jousting for the bride’s hand!

One of the first things that truly hit you was the medieval tournament. Participants suited up in real medieval armor—yes, swords, shields, and all! It was like watching a battle from the 14th century, but with a lot more laughter and a little less bloodshed. The energy was electric as people cheered for their favorite knights, and even those who weren’t competing got in on the action, taking part in the fun.

And then, there was the maypole. If you’ve never seen one in person, it’s hard to imagine just how magical it feels to watch ribbons swirl in the breeze as guests took turns weaving in and out, creating an intricate and colorful pattern. Talk about going all out! They didn’t just stop at a tournament — Ash and Craig created an immersive medieval experience that kept everyone entertained.

Now, let’s talk about the cake cutting. I’ve seen my fair share of weddings, but never before did I witness such a grand and epic moment. Ash and Craig didn’t use your typical knife; nope, they chose a full broadsword to cut their wedding cake! It was as dramatic and amazing as you’d imagine. The sword gleamed under the party tent as they cut the cake with all the pomp and flair of true medieval royalty. It was a perfect fit for the theme and a memory they—and everyone else—will never forget.

As an Auckland Wedding photographer, it’s days like these that make my job feel less like work and more like an adventure. The creativity, the surprises, the joy — it was all there. From the medieval elements that transported everyone back in time to the steampunk style and surprise wedding twist, Ash and Craig's day was nothing short of legendary.
